The New York Red Bulls have officially elevated Ugandan American, Ibrahim Sekagya from Head Coach of New York Red Bulls II to a full-time Assistant Coach with the MLS First Team, marking a step forward in his coaching career and continued impact on the organisation.

“We are pleased to add Ibra to our first team coaching staff on a full-time basis,” said Jochen Schneider, Head of Sport for the Red Bulls. “He has led the development of many great players at NYRB II and has led the team to a great start to the 2025 MLS NEXT Pro season. He has earned this opportunity, and we are grateful to have him as a part of this organization.”

Sekagya’s final match in charge of NYRB II will be on Saturday, June 15 against Chattanooga FC at MSU Soccer Park. A successor for the NYRB II head coaching role will be announced in the near future.

Since taking over as head coach of NYRB II on February 6, 2023, Sekagya has made an indelible impact. In his first season, he guided the team to a 14-8-6 record and a fourth-place finish in the Eastern Conference, reaching the conference semifinals. The 2025 season has been even more impressive: through 12 matches, NYRB II sits atop the Eastern Conference with an 8-2-2 record, 27 points, and a league-high 27 goals scored — the best start in franchise history.

Sekagya has also played a pivotal role in player development, helping talents like Omar Valencia (currently leading the first team with five assists) and Mohammed Sofo (seven goals across all competitions) transition into impactful roles.

Before coaching, Sekagya had a distinguished playing career. A native of Kampala, Uganda, he represented the Uganda national team and earned over 30 caps during his career.

He made his mark in European football with a six-year stint at Red Bull Salzburg, where he amassed 225 appearances. He later joined the New York Red Bulls from 2013 to 2014, making 41 appearances and playing a key role in their 2013 Supporters’ Shield-winning campaign.
