• Known for his strong opposition to the NRM in the past, Simon Muyanga Lutaaya has filled nomination forms and is set to compete in the NRM primaries on July 16 for a chance to represent Bulamogi County in Parliament.
  • In a defiant tone, Muyanga Lutaaya dismissed critics as “fools and nincompoops,” claiming that he’s only now realised the futility of staying in the opposition for 20 years.

Former TV presenter Simon Muyanga Lutaaya has harsh words for the opposition that criticizes him for aligning with the NRM. It’s important to recognize that Lutaaya initially gained prominence in politics as a dynamic and outspoken young member of the FDC led by Dr. Kiiza Besigye.

A strong opponent of the NRM, Lutaaya ran for Parliament once and was unsuccessful before redirecting his focus to the media. He has contributed to media outlets such as Baba TV, NBS TV, and Top Radio, among others.

Many were taken aback when Lutaaya decided to join the very party he once denounced – perhaps the saying “if you can’t beat them, join them” applies here. He has even filled out nomination forms and is now aiming to win the NRM primaries set for July 16, hoping to represent the party as an MP for Bulamogi.

However, he is currently facing a wave of criticism and many were surprised by this decision. Despite this, he remains unfazed and labels those who criticize him as fools and nincompoops.

He stated that if anyone is upset by his choice and believes they have contributed more to the opposition than he did during his 20 years, they should refrain from voting for him.

Lutaaya claims he has been foolish all these years, but has now found clarity, realizing that joining the NRM is the wisest path. He added that he evaluated his choices and concluded that joining the NRM was the best way forward, as the opposition no longer offers viable options.

“It is foolish and ignorant people who are upset with my decision to join the NRM; if these are the ones who vote, they should not support me. I assessed my opportunities and chose to affiliate with the NRM since their resources surpass what we can muster,” he remarked.

Currently, Bulamogi is represented by Hon. Sanon Wabwire. The primaries will be competitive, as he will not only have to contend with Wabwire but also former MP Kenneth Lubogo, who has previously defeated Lutaaya in past elections.

Additionally, local business mogul Bernard Mugoya, known as Agroben, is also vying for a spot in the race.
