• Kampala Woman MP Hon. Shamim Malende has stated that she is no longer in a position to fight for a party nomination, citing her loyalty to National Unity Platform (NUP) president Bobi Wine and her consistent service to the people as her defining legacy.
  • Returning from a long medical recovery, Malende faces tough competition from KCCA councilor Zaharah Luyirika.

Kampala Woman MP Hon Shamim Malende has discussed the precarious position of her mayoral seat. The MP, who has spent much of her recent term in the hospital, has recently returned from Kenya to a warm reception from her supporters.

As she campaigns for reelection for another term, Malende appears to be in a vulnerable situation, with reports from Makerere Kavule suggesting that she may not have the support of fate. Meanwhile, the prospects seem brighter for KCCA councilor Zaharah Luyirika.

In an interview with BBS Terefayina, she was questioned about the possibility of not obtaining the party’s nomination. She mentioned that she believes she has moved past the point of needing to fight for a party ticket.

According to Malende, her history of service speaks volumes, as she has always been connected to the people and has worked hard to support them even during her illness.

The MP added that some voters might support her out of sympathy due to her health challenges. Still, she is confident that no one should oppose her because if she were in their shoes, she also wouldn’t run against herself. Malende acknowledged that there are other leaders whom she respects highly and would not run against, even for significant financial incentives.

Among the accomplishments she highlighted are her efforts in honoring the party president Bobi Wine, which she believes will help her in her journey toward Janaa (heaven).

“I’m no longer in the position of wondering if I need a ticket or not. My track record speaks for itself because I’ve always been committed to serving people, even before I entered politics. Despite my health issues, I have consistently focused on service delivery. I believe I am the right candidate as I have always respected my president Bobi Wine. I’ve often thought about what I would say to God if asked about my loyalty to my leader and my community. I would affirm that I stayed true to both. Some individuals may choose to support me because of my health challenges, but I think there are leaders who should be unopposed, as their track records truly reflect their worth,” she expressed.

It remains to be seen if NUP will grant her the opportunity for a second term. However, she appears to be in poor health, which may work against her.

Additionally, the sentiment within the party seems to lean toward Luyirika, leaving Malende with a lot of hard work ahead to secure that nomination.
