Former aspirant for the guild presidency at Makerere University Business School, Juma Wasswa Balunywa is now venturing into national politics. Balunywa is currently pursuing a parliamentary nomination as the youth representative for the Eastern Region.

What has astonished many people, including some of his supporters, is his decision to run on the NRM ticket. Balunywa expressed that he believes it’s essential to aspire for more than just university politics, aiming for national-level leadership.
He mentioned that while he is campaigning for the youth MP position in the Eastern Region, his vision extends beyond that, encompassing the entirety of Uganda and even Africa.
He shared that President Museveni often speaks about advancing the nation and Africa through the principles of pan-Africanism and patriotism, qualities he believes he embodies.

Moreover, the young candidate garnered support from his colleagues who have stood by him since he began his journey in leadership. It is worth noting that he, known as JWB, participated in the MUBS guild elections held in 2024.
Highly favored and charismatic among his fellow students, he was excluded from the nominations, prompting significant protests on the Nakawa campus. Nevertheless, he urged his supporters to remain calm and accept the decision. JWB is also the son of a prominent Ugandan economist and former MUBS Principal, Wasswa Balunywa.
However, JWB must prepare to face competition from other candidates who are also vying for this position.
