• Despite their media popularity, several Ugandan journalists failed to win in the NRM primaries ahead of the 2026 general elections.
  • Notable losses include Victoria Bagaaya, Charles Mwanguhya, and Simon Muyanga Lutaaya.

Journalists have been leveraging their platforms to transition into active politics, and this strategy has proven beneficial for them. Being in a position where they can communicate with large audiences, many of these individuals have connected with the public by addressing pressing issues.

Consequently, when they choose to enter politics, they often find it much easier due to the positive public relations they have garnered from the media. Figures such as Hon Joel Ssenyonyi, Hon Ibrahim Ssemujju Nganda, Hon Kazibwe Bashir, and Mayor Robert Kakyebezi are just a few who began their careers in media before moving into politics.

Recently, a number of journalists attempted to enter the political arena during the NRM primaries, anticipating the upcoming general elections, but they did not succeed. Among those who faced difficulties in these elections were:

Victoria Bagaaya: The striking Bagaaya was a popular figure on social media, with many believing she was set to secure the NRM ticket for the woman MP of Fort Portal Tourism City. Having spent a considerable time in the media, particularly as a news anchor on NBS TV, she was seen as a strong contender. Bagaaya ended up with 3,662 votes, finishing third as the ticket went to Irene Linda, who received 9,160 votes.

Charles Mwanguhya Mpagi: Another NBS TV journalist, Mwanguhya, lost in the NRM primaries while contesting in the Burahya constituency of Kabarole district. He fell short against Joseph Mugenyi, who had 23513 votes, with Mwanguhya placing third with 6,470 votes.

Sir Simon Muyanga Lutaaya: A well-known figure in journalism, Muyanga Lutaaya also faced defeat, losing to Mutebi Bernard Mugoya in Bulamogi Constituency in Kaliro district. This was not his first electoral loss in that region; after moving from the Opposition to the NRM, he had hoped for a change in fortune, but it didn’t happen.

Nathan Igeme Nabeta: This name is familiar in media circles, particularly for his role at NBS, a TV station based in Naguru. Nabeta lost the NRM primaries to Mbaziira Richard, highlighting that voters are increasingly indifferent towards journalists. He was contesting in Jinja South East.

Mirembe Esther: Another media figure seeking a position in Parliament through the NRM party was Esther, the woman MP of NBS FM in Jinja City. Unfortunately, she suffered a significant defeat against Musika Annet, who garnered 12869 votes while Mirembe received only 2,373 votes.

These are just a few prominent media personalities who were unsuccessful in the NRM primaries. Many others are anticipated to compete in the general elections with noteworthy names like Zambali Bulasio Mukasa and Robert Sekidde, also known as Tuff B. This should serve as a valuable lesson for them to prepare adequately in the coming months to avoid disappointment.
