• UWA introduces a $10,000 fee for naming rhinos at Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary, aiming to raise funds for conservation.
  • Mixed reactions online, with some Ugandans questioning the high cost while others see it as a unique conservation opportunity.

The Business Development Manager at the Uganda Wildlife Authority (UWA), Dorcus Twesigomwe, has left many Ugandans surprised after she stated the naming process for rhinos at the Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary in Entebbe. According to Dorcus, there are currently 17 rhinos without names, and anyone has the opportunity to make history by naming one of these animals.

However, the price she mentioned for naming these creatures has led to a variety of reactions. She stated during an appearance on NBS TV that the fee is $10,000, but she emphasized that these funds would be used for the conservation efforts related to these rhinos.

“For just $10,000 you can name a rhino at the Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary. We have 17 rhinos still awaiting names, and this is your chance to make history while contributing directly to their conservation,” Dorcus Twesigomwe remarked.

This announcement has sparked mixed opinions among netizens, as many question the rationale behind paying approximately Shs 36 million just to name a rhino.

Others, however, mentioned that this initiative may appeal to a specific audience who would likely have no issues covering the costs to name the animals.

It’s important to note that Uganda is among the most naturally blessed countries when it comes to wildlife, and the UWA has implemented various initiatives aimed at protecting these species. While this initiative may be contentious, it could generate essential funds to assist in the care of these rhinos.
