• Nsangi mayor and Kadongo Kamu star Mathias Walukaga says he has invested over Shs100M in his Busiro East MP campaign.
  • NUP’s bottom-up selection process means losing the primaries could end his political ambitions.
  • Incumbent MP Medard Ssegona may still receive the party’s endorsement, leaving Walukaga at risk of losing both money and position.

Kadongo Kamu artist Mathias Walukaga has disclosed that he has invested over Shs 100 million in seeking support for his campaign to become the next MP for Busiro East. Currently serving as the mayor of Nsangi Town Council, Walukaga is a member of the National Unity Platform, where he holds the position of national coordinator for the arts sector.

In an appearance on BBS Terefayina, Walukaga stated that he did not apply for any positions other than the parliamentary seat. Additionally, NUP adopted a bottom-up strategy for candidate selection, ensuring that all positions would be occupied.

As such, anyone who does not receive endorsement for their applied position will have no alternative options, which has often been the case. The Namboole performer indicated that he has been involved in various activities, including printing campaign posters, performing at community events for free—where he usually charges 4-5 million shillings—and organizing football tournaments, among other endeavors.

He estimates his expenses to be over 100 million shillings at this point. When questioned about how he plans to recover this expenditure, Walukaga emphasized that his primary focus is on serving the people rather than the money he has spent.

I believe I have invested over 100 million shillings already in seeking support for the parliamentary seat of Busiro East. I did not apply for any other roles, particularly in local government, because the party utilized a bottom-up methodology. Failing in the primaries signifies the end of the journey. I have been participating in multiple activities, such as free performances, football tournaments, and treating people in bars.

Walukaga further stated that he will not be putting more resources into the final phase of the campaign, as he feels he has already done sufficient work.

It is important to note that this position is currently held by Hon Medard Lubega Ssegona, who is also affiliated with NUP. Although there has been considerable controversy surrounding him, particularly regarding his disagreements with the party led by Bobi Wine, rumors suggest that the party may endorse him.

If this occurs, it would mean that Walukaaga might have squandered his time, money, and the political position he holds in local government.
