• Qute Kaye, once a popular Ugandan singer, fell deep into drug addiction that nearly ruined his life and career.
  • After rehabilitation and setbacks, he successfully overcame addiction and has been sober for years.
  • He now uses his story to motivate drug addicts, stressing the importance of support systems and hope in recovery.

One of Uganda’s once upon a time budding singers, Qute Kaye has come out with a brave and solid testimony of how he overcame drug addiction. The singer rose to the scene in the mid 2000’s with his hit song, ‘Ginkese’ and then spawned a couple of more hits thereafter.

However he shortly got drowned in the effects of the entertainment industry and started abusing drugs. He slowly turned into a nuisance and was caught in several videos looking retarded.

He was at even one time caught stealing car headlamps with another singer, Pretty Glo who was his lover at the time and had also drowned into a cocktail of drugs.

Qute Kaye however turned to rehabilitation, relapsed a bit and finally got a final push and has been sober now for the last few years. An advocate for sobriety and against substance abuse, he said that it’s possible to beat addiction if someone has the right support system citing himself as an example.

“I want to tell you that overcoming addiction is a really possible thing if you have the right support system. Look at me, I’m the perfect example that it’s possible. I was so drowned into addiction and didn’t know if I could overcome it but yeah I did and what better example to learn from that you can do it,” he said.

Apparently drug abuse is one of the major problems that has hindered many musicians in Uganda. Some have succumbed to it while others have seen their careers hit the deck to never be revived.
