• Abed Bwanika has officially left the National Unity Platform (NUP) and announced that he will seek reelection as Kimanya-Kabonera MP under the Democratic Front, a new political party led by Hon. Mathias Mpuuga.
  • The move comes after a public fallout with NUP’s leader Bobi Wine. Bwanika, once a vocal presidential candidate, criticized the party’s leadership direction and will now face stiff competition from NUP’s Moses Kibuuka in the upcoming election.

Former presidential candidate and MP Hon Abed Bwanika is now officially no longer affiliated with the National Unity Platform (NUP). It’s well known that he had a fallout with the party led by Bobi Wine, but he has now formally announced that he will not seek candidacy under the party’s banner, which was already unlikely given his chances of being the flag bearer.

An official campaign poster published by Bwanika indicates that he will run for the parliamentary seat of Kimanya-Kabonera in Masaka City under the newly established Democratic Front.

It’s important to mention that the Democratic Front is led by another MP from the greater Masaka region, Hon Mathias Mpuuga, who represents Nyendo-Mukungwe and is a former Deputy of NUP.

Following his dismissal by Bobi Wine, Bwanika launched the Democratic Alliance movement which is now the Democratic Front party, attracting several MPs from NUP, himself included.

Notably, Bwanika, who has run for president twice but has not faired well, secured his first electoral victory in the 2021 general elections primarily due to the NUP wave that impacted the Buganda region.

Nonetheless, he has been one of Bobi Wine’s most vocal critics, accusing him of being sympathetic to the LGBTQ+ community.

This upcoming race is going to be challenging for Bwanika, particularly with NUP nominating Moses Kibuuka to challenge him for the seat he has held for only one term.
