Azawi has come out to explain whether she would sing for NUP presidential candidate Bobi Wine if he invited her or paid her to perform for him on his rallies. The Masavu singer, who has previously made it clear that she’s not willing to engage in political campaigns, reiterated that it would be difficult. She said she knows the influence she has on her fans and therefore wouldn’t want to sway their personal choices.

“It would really be difficult for me because like I earlier said, I don’t want to influence my fans or create disunity between them,” Azawi explained. “I know the influence I have on some people who would do something simply because I have done or endorsed it. So I want them to make their own choices.”

However, she added that she relates to Bobi Wine on a personal level because of their similar backgrounds in music.

“For me, Bobi Wine is someone I relate to, partly because he’s a musician just like I am,” she said. “The other group talks about bush war stories which I cannot relate to. But for him, his story—gauging from where he came from and where I came from—is relatable. He’s shown that we cannot stop at being musicians but become something more, especially if you get a chance and you’re learned.”

Asked whether she would consider performing for the NRM if the offer was made, Azawi maintained that it would still be difficult. When pressed further—what if she was offered about one billion shillings—she emphasized that it would be difficult to change her mind.

“It would really be so difficult because I can’t do the job wholeheartedly since I wouldn’t be feeling it,” she said. “I’m an honest woman and if I took that money, you would have to be dragging me all the time because it’s not my own will.”

The singer also dismissed recent rumors claiming that she is pregnant after a photo circulated online. She said the rumors were false and urged fans not to jump to conclusions.
