- President Yoweri Museveni has announced the implementation of biometric voting ahead of Uganda’s 2026 general elections, asserting it will end electoral fraud, particularly by the National Unity Platform (NUP).
- The new system will require voters to have registered fingerprints, effectively disqualifying anyone not in the biometric database.
President Museveni has delivered unfavorable news for opposition political parties, particularly the National Unity Platform (NUP), in anticipation of the 2026 general elections. Museveni made these remarks during his speech about the Parish Development Model (PDM) ‘Emyooga’ Funds in the Greater Luweero region.

It’s important to recognize that the NRM was significantly outperformed by NUP in Buganda, and both parties were closely matched in the Busoga region. However, the President stated that these areas should not be held accountable for the previous election outcomes, as it was not their doing.
He accused NUP of election fraud by colluding with the Electoral Commission. Nonetheless, this issue will be resolved in the upcoming elections as biometric voting will be implemented.
Consequently, anyone not registered in the system will be ineligible to vote since fingerprints will be mandatory for all voters. Museveni believes this will lead to a landslide victory for the NRM across nearly all regions of the nation.

“Do not fault the residents of Busoga and Buganda for last election’s outcomes. It was not their responsibility. We possess evidence of the opposition’s trickery, facilitated by the Electoral Commission in partnership with these dishonest individuals. No need for concern – we’re implementing biometric voting to address this. Fingerprints will be required for voting, and if you lack them, you cannot cast your vote,” he stated.
For several years, Museveni has accused NUP of electoral malpractice from the presidential contest down to parliamentary elections, with the latest being the Kawempe North by-election, which was won by NUP candidate Nalukoola Elias Luyimbazi.
