- As Uganda edges closer to the 2026 general elections, political tension is rising in Kira Municipality, where veteran MP Ibrahim Ssemujju Nganda is gearing up for a major showdown.
- Representing Kira since 2011, Ssemujju now faces a serious challenge from George Musisi, a respected lawyer and prominent member of the National Unity Platform (NUP).
As the 2026 general elections approach in just a few months, various emotions like speculation, fear, confusion, and excitement fill the air in areas where political contests are intense. Kira Municipality, represented in Parliament by Hon Ssemujju Nganda, is one such region. Nganda has been a member of the August House since 2011.

He has navigated numerous challenges throughout his career, but now he encounters a new challenge from the National Unity Platform (NUP).
It is important to highlight that Kira Municipality comprises three divisions: Bweyogerere, Namugongo, and Kira.
Ssemujju has previously served as the area representative under the FDC ticket. Even during the significant shift of many politicians to NUP in 2021, he upheld his principles and remained with the party, despite its struggles. He indeed secured a convincing victory over NUP’s candidate, Lubega Abby, known as Kira Young.

This time, Ssemujju’s primary opponent is George Musisi, a well-known lawyer and legal expert who is favored by NUP. Musisi is part of the legal team for the Makerere Kavule-based party and has recently been associated with Bobi Wine.
Musisi is expected to secure the party’s nomination ahead of Kira Young, who has also shown interest in the position. However, Ssemujju seems to have little concern as he is recognized as one of the most popular and respected legislators. In fact, NUP has faced considerable backlash for endorsing a candidate against him.
Many believe that Ssemujju has contributed more than any other MP, including those within NUP. Over time, this articulate and outspoken MP has courageously highlighted financial mismanagement in State House and other areas plagued by the abuse of power.

Ssemujju is known for his willingness to speak truth to authority, doing so in a respectful, humorous, and yet fierce manner. He is also a skilled debater in both Luganda and English, a talent that makes many other MPs uneasy.
On the parliamentary floor, he is a frequent contributor, and when he speaks, his peers tend to pay attention and listen.
Ssemujju has once again remained faithful to his principles by refusing to abandon the FDC Katonga branch, which has recently rebranded as the People’s Front for Freedom (PFF).
In fact, he will run under the PFF banner after recently being appointed as the party’s Secretary General. While politics can be unpredictable, there is a strong likelihood that Ssemujju will triumph, particularly because of the pride and respect he has earned from the people of Kira and his role as an MP. Consequently, George Musisi will surely need a miracle to surpass the pride of Kira.
