• Media personality Douglas Lwanga has weighed in on the ongoing “skills vs qualifications” debate in Uganda’s media industry.
  • Reacting to a post about Pretty Nicole, Lwanga argued that talent, creativity, and audience influence now carry more weight than academic degrees.

Douglas Lwanga has remarked that in modern media space, qualifications seem to matter more than actual qualifications.

His comment came after a user on X shared a screen grab of Pretty Nicole, real name Emanuella Musimenta, auditioning for a show on Baba TV.

Nicole, who became famous on the internet in 2023 after a series of scandals and leaked videos, has since become a familiar face on TikTok where she now promotes fashion and music.

Responding to the discussion, Lwanga said that the media industry today values skills and audience influence more than academic qualifications.

“The sad reality is that the media space, like most jobs today, is more about ‘what can you do’ than ‘what did you study.’ It’s skills versus qualifications. With the rise of technology and social media, the big question has shifted to ‘How many eyeballs do you bring to the media channel?’ not ‘What degree do you hold?’ That’s the new reality,” Lwanga wrote.

Pretty Nicole, who dropped out of school after Primary Seven despite receiving a scholarship offer from Hajjat Kulthum, seems to want to carve her own path in the entertainment world through content creation.
