• Hon. Geoffrey Lutaaya, MP for Kakuto County, exposes the truth behind Parliament’s supposed wealth, revealing that financial privileges are mostly reserved for ruling party (NRM) members.
  • He opens up about the daily financial demands from his constituents, personal struggles, and how he balances politics with family support.

The Member of Parliament for Kakuto County in Rakai District, Hon Geoffrey Lutaaya, has clarified the misconceptions surrounding the vast riches associated with Parliament. The legislative body has gained a reputation for opulence, wealth, and luxury.

Numerous MPs have always strived intensely to stay in the Legislature. Aspiring candidates often take out substantial loans or even sell their possessions to secure election as MPs. But amidst these reports, is there really money and wealth available?

Lutaaya asserts that the wealth does exist, but similar to ordinary life, it operates on a ‘who knows you’ basis within Parliament. The singer-turned-politician mentioned that a majority of MPs who benefit financially are from the ruling party, frequently traveling on government business.

“To be honest, there is money in Parliament, and I won’t deny it, but it is reserved for a specific group. Not every MP you see has the wealth you hear about. For instance, I’ve consistently heard that MPs get flown abroad for medical treatment, but I have never witnessed that. Only NRM MPs, and very few from the opposition, receive such privileges,” Lutaaya stated.

The MP also noted that many individuals in Parliament face significant burdens due to their responsibilities. He shared that in his constituency, about 10 people pass away each day, and he feels obligated to contribute to their funerals, averaging at least 70,000 shillings per funeral. This means he could spend around 350,000 shillings in just one day.

Moreover, he also contributes to various community events and projects like churches, schools, and mosques, adjusting his donations based on their scale.

The former musician, who is aiming for a second term, expressed that he is fortunate his wife, singer Irene Namatovu, earns a decent income.

Together, they manage their household expenses; otherwise, it would have been quite challenging for him to cope.
