• Mackline Asiimire, a Ugandan influencer and wife of comedian Emeka, was defeated in the NRM Igara West primaries. Despite an energetic campaign, she placed third, with many youths on social media labeling her a regime sympathizer and celebrating her loss.
  • Emeka, however, praised her resilience and leadership, declaring the campaign the beginning of a greater journey.

Mackline Asiimire, an influencer on Twitter now known as X and the spouse of city comedian, emcee and radio host Emeka the Romantic Mukiga, faced a significant defeat in the Igara West NRM primaries. Having established herself as a highly active participant in the Ugandans on Twitter (UOT) community, she chose to venture into active politics.

Mackline kicked off her campaign several months ago and has been visibly engaged on the ground. Her team and she were hopeful that something extraordinary might occur.

However, when the results were announced, the young woman found herself in a fierce competition with five men, ultimately unable to prevail.

Nonetheless, she finished in third place with 4,771 votes, while the leader, Amanya Cohen, garnered 24,097 votes. Despite her loss, she’s received a significant amount of supportive messages from friends and well-wishers on social media. Her strongest backing has come from her husband, Emeka, who has stood by her since the beginning.

In a message to her, Emeka expressed that he recognizes the dedication she poured into this endeavor. He acknowledged that while the results did not align with their hopes for victory, he still sees her as a winner in his eyes and in the hearts of many who supported her.

Moreover, he reassured her that this is not the end but rather the beginning of a movement. In words of comfort and encouragement, the KFM presenter conveyed his love and faith in her.

“This isn’t the end. It’s a beginning a pause, not a period. You were born to lead, and nothing can take away the strength, brilliance, and resilience you carry inside you. I’m so proud of you. I’ll always be your loudest cheerleader, your quiet comfort, and your strongest support no matter where the road leads next. I love you more than words can say. Rest, smile, and lift your chin. The world hasn’t seen the last of you,” wrote Emeka.

Despite the outpouring of support she has received, many users on social media seem to be celebrating her loss. This backlash is primarily from youths who feel let down by the government.

As a result, a fellow young individual who resonates with the current regime is viewed as a traitor and has thus become a target.
