• Mathias Mpuuga mocks NUP, saying he left to engage in “mature politics.”
  • Urges supporters to remain disciplined despite blackmail from NUP.
  • Faces challenge from NUP’s Gyaviira Lubowa Ssebina for the Nyendo–Mukungwe seat.

Former Leader of the Opposition and ex–NUP Vice President Hon. Mathias Mpuuga has thrown shade at his former party following his nomination to run as Member of Parliament for Nyendo–Mukungwe, a position he currently holds.

Speaking to his supporters after nomination, Mpuuga recalled how he was hounded out of the National Unity Platform (NUP). The legislator said he vividly remembers being constantly told to “leave the child’s party,” referring to NUP President Robert Kyagulanyi Ssentamu.

Mpuuga remarked that he eventually wondered what mature politicians like himself were doing in what he termed a “kiddish party.” He explained that he and his colleagues chose to engage in “adult politics” aimed at emancipating their people and securing real authority — not comedy.

“They used to tell us to leave the boy’s party, and we kept wondering what adults were doing in a kiddish party,” Mpuuga said. “So we decided to go and do mature things. Let them keep doing children’s stuff. We are focused on gaining authority and uplifting our people, not just playing politics.”

He also commended his supporters for their discipline and unity amid what he described as continued blackmail and provocation from the NUP hierarchy. Mpuuga noted that the overwhelming turnout at his nomination renewed his belief that “unity cannot be beaten.”

It should be noted that NUP has already positioned Gyaviira Lubowa Ssebina to challenge Mpuuga for the Nyendo–Mukungwe seat he has held for three consecutive terms, as he now seeks a fourth. The Democratic Front strongman remains a dominant political figure in the Masaka sub-region.
