• NUP denies Hon Medard Ssegona the Busiro East flagbearer card, opting for singer Mathias Walukagga.
  • Ssegona says he’s not bitter with the party’s decision but noted gaps in the vetting process.
  • The MP hints at running as an independent, emphasising loyalty to his constituents over party politics.

Busiro East member of Parliament Hon Medard Lubega Ssegona has spoken out after the National Unity Platform, NUP, denied him the card of being the official flag bearer for the upcoming general election. In a not so shocking move, singer Mathias Walukagga who is currently the outgoing mayor of Nsangi Town Council was chosen.

Ssegona who is one of the most popular members of Parliament and one that many people feel that is qualified for the August House has revealed that he holds no bitterness towards the Bobi Wine led party.

He said that perhaps he wasn’t fancied in their party’s assessment. According to Ssegona he’s sure that he wasn’t even asked some of the requirements during the vetting process because those conducting it didn’t know how best to ask them.

The MP however said that deep down in his heart, he’s very okay and holds no grudge against the outcome or anyone in the Kavule based party.

“I’m not bitter at anyone and deep from the bottom of my heart, I’m very fine. I think I probably didn’t meet the requirements of their assessment because somewhere they didn’t even know how to properly communicate to me what they exactly needed.”

However, in another talk show, hosted on NBS TV, Ssegona made remarks that seemed a bit salty towards NUP. Asked whether he’s going to run as an independent or work for the better of the party, the MP said that there’s no job that NUP has given him so far. Therefore he’s open to running as an independent unless otherwise.

The legislator said that he has been in Parliament since 2011 and all that time, the biggest stakeholders in his being there were the people of Busiro East. According to Ssegona in his first two terms, the Democratic Party was another stakeholder till the previous election when he switched allegiance to NUP.

Therefore it’s just one stakeholder, the political party that has spoken. However, the biggest who are the constituents are yet to express their dissatisfaction with him.
