• Buyaga West MP Barnabas Tinkasiimire has rejected the idea of retiring from politics, insisting that at 52 years old, he is still too young to step away from public service.
  • Speaking after serving four terms in Parliament, Tinkasiimire said his earlier years were about learning, but he now feels better equipped—especially as he pursues a PhD in law—to serve his constituents effectively.

The Member of Parliament for Buyaga West in Kagadi District, Hon Barnabas Tinkasiimire, has stated that he is too young to leave politics. When questioned about his continued presence in Parliament after serving four terms, he confidently replied that at 52 years old, he still has a lot to contribute.

The vocal MP mentioned that he feels he has nowhere else to go, having been in Parliament since his youth.

Additionally, he believes that he is only beginning to grasp how to truly assist his constituents, noting that his initial two terms were more about theory than action. Tinkasiimire also shared that he is currently pursuing a PhD in law, and he is confident that he is entering his prime.

“I’m not ready to step back from active politics. Where would I go? This has been my life since I was young. Serving my fourth term at just 52 years means I am still considered young. In my first two terms, I was mainly focused on speaking and debating in Parliament. However, now that I am working on a PhD in law, I am better equipped to help free my community from their challenges,” he expressed.

Recently, the MP lost the NRM primaries to EALA MP Denis Namara, and many speculate that he might run as an Independent candidate.

Furthermore, Tinkasiimire’s association with the NRM party has been fraught with controversy, as he has been labeled a rebel MP due to his criticisms of the party and President Museveni on multiple occasions. Allegations have also surfaced that he was recently kidnapped and tortured under the directives of CDF Gen. Muhoozi Kainerugaba.
