• Mudra has spoken out against the TikTok-driven state of Uganda’s music industry, arguing that the platform has shifted focus away from talent to short-lived, catchy songs with little artistic value.
  • He says this trend has created one-hit wonders, harmed quality music production, and discouraged artists from long-term career growth.

Singer Mudra has shed light on the present condition of music in Uganda. The Balo Balo artist mentioned that music has shifted away from being about talent and is now focused on what sounds catchy.

He pointed out how the rise of TikTok has significantly impacted the music scene. As per the singer, musicians have lost their motivation to produce quality music. Instead, they aim for catchy tunes, quickly arrange concerts, which attract large audiences, and fail to develop their careers further.

Honestly, music is no longer centered on talent. It’s predominantly about catchy elements and lyrics. There’s no point in complaining about bubble gum music. The TikTok phenomenon has caused irreversible harm. Some artists still depend on their past hits because the music they create today is lacking. Just produce a catchy tune with maybe silly words and then hold a concert around it.

This observation rings true, especially in light of current musical trends not just in Uganda but globally. Numerous one-hit wonders have emerged thanks to TikTok, only to vanish shortly afterward.

Most of these tracks are not even impressive, as they rely on catchy and occasionally absurd lyrics. It’s no surprise that even established artists have adopted this trend, further damaging the music industry.
