• Posting on his official X (formerly Twitter) account, Gen Muhoozi Kainerugaba described these individuals as a daily nuisance, accusing them of shouting at commuters through loudspeakers during morning and evening rush hours.
  • However, critics argue that the street preachers are merely exercising their right to freedom of religion and expression. Many of them see Gen Muhoozi’s directive as an infringement on civil liberties and religious freedom.

The Chief of Defense Forces, Gen Muhoozi Kainerugaba, has called for the elimination of all street preachers. In a post on his X page, Gen MK, as he is commonly known by his supporters, instructed the Uganda Police to “REMOVE” these preachers immediately.

He expressed that these individuals shout at commuters daily as they go to and from work and home using loudspeakers. Consequently, this must cease and should happen without delay.

“Uganda Police should immediately REMOVE all the fake preachers who yell at commuters (with microphones) every day as they travel to work and home. This MUST HAPPEN immediately!!,” Gen Muhoozi posted.

This stance elicited mixed reactions on social media, with some individuals backing the suggestion while others opposed it.

Supporters of MK contended that these preachers create excessive noise, cause inconvenience, and represent a public nuisance. In contrast, opponents argued that these individuals are merely conveying the Gospel of God and exercising their freedom of speech.

Street preachers have been a source of contention recently, especially since many of them are young people who seem to prefer preaching over engaging in productive work during work hours.

Furthermore, some of these preachers hold degrees, which is why a majority have welcomed Gen Muhoozi Kainerugaba’s proposition.
