• General Muhoozi Kainerugaba announced that Uganda’s Lugogo Arena will be transformed into a state-of-the-art multipurpose sports complex, following the completion of Hoima City Stadium.
  • Summa, currently building the $129 million Hoima City Stadium for AFCON 2027, has a proven track record, having constructed Kigali’s BK Arena in eight months.

The project will be undertaken by Summa, a Turkish construction company currently building the Hoima City Stadium in preparation for AFCON 2027, where Uganda is a co-host nation.

Lugogo Indoor Arena, which currently hosts basketball and netball games, is set to be transformed into a state-of-the-art facility. Summa, who constructed the Dakar Arena and BK Arena in Kigali (completed in just eight months from January to August 2019), will lead the project.

The company began work on Hoima City Stadium in August 2024, with an 18-month timeline, and is on track to deliver by early 2026, according to Peter Ogwang, Minister of State for Education and Sports (Sports).

General Muhoozi, via his X account, confirmed that Lugogo Arena will be Summa’s next project after Hoima. “After Hoima Stadium, we are going to start on Lugogo Arena. With the same Turkish company. I will visit Turkey soon, apparently we have a lot of friends there,” he stated.

Summa’s vision for the Lugogo Sports Complex includes:

•  Main Arena: 15,000-seat capacity

•  Mini Arena: 1,500-seat capacity

•  Hotel: 120 keys

•  Hostel: 60 keys

•  Hockey Field

•  Office and Gym facilities

Summa’s ongoing work on Hoima City Stadium, costing $129 million, demonstrates their capability. Designed to seat 20,000 spectators, the stadium includes:

•  A 2,000-seat indoor multi-sports arena

•  A training pitch

•  A semi-Olympic-sized swimming pool

•  Outdoor courts for basketball, netball, and volleyball

•  Parking for over 1,000 vehicles

As of April 1, 2025, the project had progressed to the roof installation stage, staying on schedule for completion in early 2026.

The Lugogo Arena project has strong backing from the Ugandan government. In September 2023, Summa met with President Yoweri Museveni, who approved their proposal for the complex. “I welcome the proposal by Summa, a Turkish construction company, to construct a modern state-of-the-art multipurpose indoor sports complex at Lugogo in Kampala. The government will support them because we need it to continue developing sports in Uganda,” Museveni said.
