- Former MP Mubarak Munyagwa, now the leader of the newly launched Common Man’s Party, has sharply criticized the National Unity Platform (NUP) for misdirecting its political efforts.
- He argues that the opposition party spends more time attacking fellow opposition figures—such as artists Alien Skin and Bebe Cool and even the Buganda Kingdom—than focusing on dismantling President Museveni’s regime.
The founder of the newly established Common Man’s Party, Mubarak Munyagwa, has expressed his dissatisfaction with the current largest opposition party, the National Unity Platform (NUP). After launching his party, Munyagwa confirmed his grievances concerning the Kavule-based political organization.
The former Kawempe South Member of Parliament stated that NUP lacks ‘political bearing.’ They are unclear about whom to confront and when. He argued that while the party possesses significant resources as the opposition, they often direct their attacks toward fellow opposition members rather than the government.

Munyagwa highlighted several events that he believes the party should have overlooked or should consider ignoring in the future. He mentioned the party’s disputes with singer Alien Skin, followed by conflicts with Bebe Cool, and then the Katikkiro and Mengo.
The former FDC member indicated that he does not see how these actions contribute to removing President Museveni from power. In fact, he believes that this is precisely where the President wants them to be, as he realizes that it does not affect his grip on power.

Furthermore, Munyagwa noted that NUP received an opportunity that no other opposition party in Uganda has ever had.
This includes substantial backing from the Central region, where the government is based, and where most of its supporters are young people. However, they have misdirected their priorities, which has hindered their prospects of unseating Museveni.
“I have a major concern regarding political bearing. This truly hampers them. You cannot be the opposition’s most formidable force while predominantly targeting your own side instead of addressing Museveni. We cannot simultaneously evade the dictator and also be wary of you.”
“NUP has been afforded a unique opportunity that no other opposition party has enjoyed, with significant support in the central region where the government operates, and a youth base. At times, I observe the issues they prioritize and question their judgment. At one point, they were in conflict with Alien Skin, then with Bebe Cool, and subsequently with the Katikkiro while the Kabaka was killed. This is exactly what Museveni desires since he knows it will not threaten his position,” Munyagwa stated.
With the launch of his new political party, Munyagwa aspires to shift the direction of the opposition. Nevertheless, he did not dismiss the possibility of collaborating with NUP if an opportunity arises.
As the 2026 general elections approach, numerous opposition parties have emerged, including the Democratic Front (DF) led by NUP’s former deputy president Mathias Mpuuga, and the PFF led by Lukwago and Besigye, among others.
