- President Yoweri Museveni recently joked about the complicated name of Uganda Electricity Distribution Company Limited (UEDCL) during an official address.
- Struggling to pronounce it, he suggested the company should consider a shorter, catchier name, similar to UMEME’s.
President Museveni is recognized for his excellent sense of humor, which has endeared millions of Ugandans to him. This explains the lots of memes across social media featuring him, as he’s always ready to crack a joke out of different things.

This was evident during a recent address where he engaged with an employee from the Uganda Electricity Distribution Company Limited (UEDCL). This company is the current electricity service provider and is government-owned.
Though it took over just a few months ago, it appears the President is unfamiliar with its proper name. When he asked the employee if they were still called UEB (Uganda Electricity Board), the staff member responded that they are now known as UEDCL.
The President attempted to repeat the name but couldn’t finish before he erupted into laughter, joking that he might die trying to pronounce it.

What kind of name is that? I might not even get through saying it because it’s too lengthy. You should choose something much easier for people to pronounce.
It’s important to note that UEDCL took the place of UMEME, which was far easier to pronounce. They also replaced the memorable Yaka with Light, which has altogether made it less appealing for Ugandans.
Some social media users even took to joking about the UEDCL name, with some referring to it as “UPDF,” among other names.
