Renowned Ugandan and East African music video director Sasha Vybz has announced the launch of a film school, saying the move is driven by purpose, gratitude, and a desire to give back to the industry that shaped his career.

Asked why he is opening a film school now, Sasha Vybz responded simply: “Why now? Why not now?” He explained that after spending 14 years in the industry, he feels a responsibility to pass on knowledge and create opportunities for young people with dreams similar to his own.

“I’ve been in the game for the past 14 years and I feel like I owe it to the people to be able to put up something that is going to influence and equip these young people with skills,” he said.

Sasha noted that while many people enter the creative industry purely to make money, his goal is different.

“Most people want to come into the industry, milk it, take the money and serve their own interests. I didn’t want to follow that journey,” he explained, adding that the industry has fed him and built his life.

The film school, he said, is not just a business venture but a community give-back project. It will offer training across all aspects of filmmaking, including makeup, special effects, camera work, directing, and scriptwriting.

“It’s a one-stop shop where young creatives can come, get inspired, and understand what has made Sasha Vybz who he is today,” he said.

Beyond training, the school will also provide scholarships and bursaries to support talented young people who may not afford film education.

“If I can leave a legacy and inspire these young people, why not?” Sasha Vybz added, emphasizing that the school will also feature mentorship from other established creatives who have shaped East Africa’s content scene.
