• Hon Medard Lubega Ssegona has spoken out ahead of the National Unity Platform (NUP) vetting process, addressing his widely criticized support for embattled MP Hon Mathias Mpuuga.
  • Ssegona, a long-time friend and political ally of Mpuuga, has come under fire from some NUP supporters who view his actions as betrayal.

Hon Medard Lubega Ssegona continues to be put on the spot ahead of the upcoming general elections as well as the ongoing NUP vetting process. This is in regards to his affiliation with Nyendo-Mukungwe MP, Hon Mathias Mpuuga.

The two leaders have been great friends for quite a long time and have steadily risen through the political ranks simultaneously. Even when crossing to NUP from DP, they did it together but unfortunately, Mpuuga was kicked out of the Kavule based party after thr controversial Shs 500m.

Mpuuga went on to establish his own party known as the Democratic Front and during the launch, Ssegona was one of the invited guests. Even when the former leader of opposition was getting hounded out of the party by NUP’s hierarchy, the Busiro East MP was one of those who stood by his side and defended him.

This has seen Ssegona on the wrong side of many NUP keyboard warriors and foot soldiers who accuse him of demeaning their party and leader, Bobi Wine.

Ssegona however has now stated that he told Bobi Wine that he couldn’t castigate Mpuuga because he saw nothing wrong with what he did.

Additionally, he said that his allegiance to the party has never changed despite not agreeing on some things within the party. The MP who sits on the COSASE Committee in Parliament added that he doesn’t see why he’s the one who has been singled out because of his opinion about Mpuuga.

“My allegiance to the party has never changed but people have to know that we cannot always have the same opinion. Besides this is just one opinion that we differed, why are the other 99 opinions not talked about. I also categorically told my president that it was not the first or last time that we would disagree. The most important thing however is to respect one another. Then in regards to my visit to Masaka during the Democratic Front’s launch, I received a card that was inviting me alone. I drove alone and went to the function. It was none of my business to inquire if others too had been called. Even while there I didn’t talk ill about my party,” said Ssegona.

It’s however clear that the MP is not a favorite especially on NUP social media streets. These frictions coupled with the remarks he made a few months ago where he said that he will succeed Bobi Wine as the NUP president once the singer turned musician’s ‘agreed term’ expires have all been working in the favor of his opponents.

It’s now waited to see if the party will trust him and hand him the official ticket once again.
