Many have described this as a commendable gesture, recognising the decades of dedication and sacrifice these officers have made in safeguarding Uganda’s security and stability.
It’s not clear if the reports about this packages are true. However, on several occasions while retiring army officials, the President has repeatedly urged them to avoid bad vices such as gambling advising them to invest wisely as they refuse generous retirement packages. “I want to quote a Luganda proverb: “Obwato bufa magoba.” Soldiers have faced low salaries for a long time; as they retire, they will take home good money.
I therefore urge them to plan their retirement wisely to avoid scams. I once again salute them for their service and wish them good luck!”
Meanwhile this retirement marks another chapter in the UPDF’s ongoing process of honouring its long-serving officers. This also paves way for younger commanders to take leadership roles.
