- Sir Mathias Walukaaga, the renowned Kadongo Kamu singer and mayor of Kyengera Town Council, has launched his political campaign to unseat Hon. Medard Lubega Ssegona as the Member of Parliament for Busiro East.
- His decision creates a potential rift within NUP, especially as Ssegona faces scrutiny over his loyalty following ties with former NUP leader Mathias Mpuuga and controversial remarks about party president Bobi Wine.
Notable Kadongo Kamu artist Sir Mathias Walukagga is preparing to compete against the current representative, Hon Medard Lubega Ssegona, for the Busiro East parliamentary position. This follows his confirmation of a bid for the seat by handing in his nomination papers at the National Unity Platform’s headquarters in Makerere Kavule.

Walukagga, who also serves as the Mayor of Kyengera Town Council, stated that after receiving numerous requests from constituents for him to represent them in Parliament, he has chosen to take this significant step that could change his political journey.
“I am Mathias Walukagga, the mayor of Kyengera Town Council and the National Unity Platform’s national coordinator. I am submitting my nomination papers for the Busiro East Member of Parliament position. I made this decision after many voices urged me to do so,” he noted.
This situation could create a moment of tension for the National Unity Platform regarding the selection of their candidate since they do not conduct primary elections.

The incumbent Ssegona recently delivered a strong warning to potential challengers, stating that anyone believing they can unseat him might be under some illusion or not mentally fit.
The prominent lawyer and politician further claimed that the NUP cannot deny him a ticket due to his comprehensive qualifications as the ideal candidate for the role. However, there appears to be growing skepticism towards Ssegona within the party due to his familiarity with Mathias Mpuuga, who parted ways with NUP last year.
Speculation had arisen that Ssegona might switch to Mpuuga’s newly formed Democratic Front. Additionally, his recent comments about ousting Bobi Wine from NUP after the former Kyadondo East legislator’s two terms as NUP president have seemingly put him at odds with several party leaders and supporters.
The announcement of the official NUP candidate for the Busiro East parliamentary seat promises to be both entertaining and tense.
