• Azawi has strongly condemned fellow musicians who evade taxes, blaming them for slowing down the growth and legitimacy of the country’s music industry.
  • Speaking out on the issue, Azawi noted that while brands are eager to work with artists, many lack formal brand structures or tax compliance.

Musician Priscilla Zawedde, known as Azawi, has criticized fellow artists who refuse to pay taxes. She stated that these individuals have hindered the progress of the music industry.

Azawi pointed out that many brands and companies are eager to collaborate with musicians, but a significant number of them lack any formal recognition of their brand. She mentioned her label, Swangz Avenue, noting that they do meet their tax obligations, thereby aiding the industry.

The Quinamino singer explained that these musicians contribute to the government’s reluctance to engage with and support the music scene. She indicated that many artists claim they pay taxes merely by performing at concerts.

However, she clarified that it is the promoters who handle the tax payments.

Moreover, Azawi expressed her desire for these artists to organize themselves so that the government can partner with them in a more formal and legitimate manner, rather than treating them like beggars seeking assistance.

“Numerous musicians do not pay taxes. When asked, they readily claim to be taxpaying because of their concerts. They overlook the fact that it’s the promoters who are responsible for paying taxes. At Swangz Avenue, we do fulfill our tax obligations. These artists are the ones preventing the advancement of the industry because policymakers struggle to collaborate with us. Personally, I want the government to engage with us on a legal basis instead of treating us as if they are merely offering help, as our industry holds significant potential. Therefore, fellow creatives need to elevate their standards,” she remarked.

The music industry has long been labeled as chaotic by governmental figures, including President Museveni. Efforts to organize the industry have faced strong opposition from within, attributed to high levels of greed, selfishness, and distrust.
