• Hon. Nyeko Derrick has announced he will not seek re-election for Makindye East MP, ending his five-year tenure.
  • His decision leaves Tuff B, a musician and media personality, as the strongest contender in the upcoming race.
  • The move has sparked speculation over whether Nyeko’s exit was personal or influenced by party politics.

The race for the Makindye East parliamentary position has taken a surprising twist after Hon. Nyeko Derrick announced that he will not be seeking re-election in the forthcoming elections.

Via a heartfelt message to his supporters on his X page, Nyeko expressed gratitude to the people who entrusted him with leadership over the five years he has served in the August House.

“It is with a heart full of joy that I have served you with honour, respect, and a deep commitment never to betray the trust of your vote,” Nyeko said.

Apparently the outgoing MP admitted that the decision was not easy, especially for his campaign team as well as loyal supporters who strongly believed he would secure another victory.

“After deep reflection, I have made the difficult decision not to offer myself for election in the coming polls. This choice does not diminish the journey we have walked together, nor the victories we have achieved,” he added.

Nyeko, who was one of the young leaders brought forth by the 2021 NUP wave reminded the public that he remains “a man of no corruption, no problems,” insisting that his exit from the race should not weaken the unity and resilience of the Makindye East community.

With Nyeko stepping aside, the political spotlight now shifts to the remaining contenders. Among them is musician-turned-media personality Robert Sekidde alias Tuff B who many analysts now see as the most competent candidate left in the race.

It’s not clear whether Hon Nyeko’s decision has been influenced by the party hierarchy or purely a personal decision. However, he’s on several occasions clashed with party foot soldiers and also accused by some sections of NUP of performing below par in the 5 year term.
