• Phina Mugerwa nominated to contest for Uganda’s Female Workers MP seat.
  • Vows to advocate for informal sector and migrant domestic workers’ rights.
  • Pledges to mobilize and empower women and youth often left out of labor protection.

Singer Phina Mugerwa, popularly known as Phina Masanyalaze, has been nominated at the Electoral Commission headquarters in Kampala to contest for the position of Female Workers Member of Parliament.

Speaking after her nomination, Phina said her decision to join politics stems from her passion to advocate for workers’ rights, especially those in the informal sector.

“My calling today is to become a female workers’ MP. I’ve been a leader in the creative sector for some time, and there was a reason that brought me into this position. First and foremost, I’m a workaholic,” she said.

She noted that many Ugandan workers continue to suffer due to limited protection under the current Employment Act.

“When it comes to the Employment Act, it only protects those in the formal sector. How about those in the informal? We need to balance the boat because when it comes to the national GDP, it’s now the informal sector contributing around 30%,” Phina explained.

The singer emphasized that she intends to focus on mobilizing and sensitizing informal workers, especially women, about their rights and opportunities.

“I want to speak for those girls who are speechless,” she said.

Phina also pledged to advocate for Ugandan domestic workers abroad, commonly known as “Kadamas,” who often face mistreatment.

“Investors have policies and regulations for workers, but how about those girls and boys who go out? Who speaks for them? I’ve come out to speak for their voices,” she added.

Phina, who has served in various leadership roles within Uganda’s creative industry, believes her experience equips her to represent workers’ concerns at a national level. Her campaign message centers on fairness, empowerment, and protection for all Ugandan workers, especially those left out of the system.
