• Bobi Wine has reported that his chief bodyguard and long-time ally, Eddie Mutwe, was violently abducted by armed men wearing SFC (Special Forces Command) uniforms in Bukerere, Kiwango village, Mukono District.
  • This incident follows the recent arrests and imprisonment of other NUP bodyguards, including Achilleo Kivumbi and Gaddafi Mugumya.

National Unity Platform (NUP) leader Bobi Wine has announced that his close associate and head of his security team, Eddie Mutwe, has been “abducted” by armed men believed to be from Uganda’s Special Forces Command (SFC).

In a statement shared through his social media platforms, Bobi Wine (real name Robert Kyagulanyi) said:

“Comrade Eddie Mutwe has just been violently abducted from Kiwango village in Mukono district by armed men in SFC uniform travelling in a Toyota van (‘drone’).”

Reports from within the NUP camp suggest that Eddie Mutwe had traveled to Bukerere, Kiwango village, to attend a Hakika ceremony for the child of a fellow NUP supporter, often referred to as “foot soldiers” among Bobi Wine’s fanbase.

This incident adds to growing concerns about the treatment of Bobi Wine’s close associates. Recently, two of Bobi Wine’s other bodyguards, Achilleo Kivumbi and Gaddafi Mugumya, were arrested and remanded to Masaka Main Prison on charges of aggravated robbery, simple robbery, assault, and malicious damage, according to Daily Monitor. Achilleo Kivumbi was arrested in February in Nansana and has been detained since.

At the time of writing, the reasons behind Eddie Mutwe’s abduction remain unclear.

However, he now joins a growing list of NUP supporters and leaders detained or disappeared under controversial circumstances.

This is not Eddie Mutwe’s first experience with detention. In 2021, he, alongside Nubian Li and Sir Dan Magic, was arrested during the election campaign period. They spent six months in prison before being released on bail on June 14, 2021.

The NUP leadership has condemned these actions as politically motivated targeting of opposition voices and has called for Eddie Mutwe’s immediate release.
